Week Four
In-class Montage project: Combine at least three images in photoshop, that go to together to form a single picture plane. see definition for montage below. The theme for this project should have something to do with an activity that you enjoy and know about doing. Create an image that tells your audience about an activity that you enjoy and what it is you like about it.
An in-class demo will cover tools for completing this project.
Post results to your blog by next class.
Blog: Finish creating links to your classmates blogs (14 total). Post results of Activity Montage project by next week.
Self Design Project 1
This project should utilize two computer applications and a handmade aspect. The point of this project is to create a piece that relies on both handmade and computer based aspects.
Assignment: Create an advertisement for a fictitious (or real) product or event ( you must have the rights to use/represent the product or event (unless your family owns Coca Cola...this would not be an option). Consider what is the pertinent information that must be conveyed; e.i. when, where, how much does it cost. Question to consider: think about how you convey this information, and what that says about the product or event--like the saying, "it's not just what you say, but how you say it that counts."
What form should the advertisement take? It could be a digital image, a printed image (both), a limited or one-of-kind poster...
Questions to answer and return to me via email before next class:
What is the product or event that you are going to advertise for? (a Halloween party at Laural Hill Cemetery on Saturday October 31 (fantasy party))
Give a brief description of your concept for your Advertisement? (I will go to Laural Hill Cemetery and take pictures of zombies chasing innocent youths (all costumed friends) and combine images into one background image using photoshop. End result will look like a "B" Horror Movie Poster.)
How will you execute the project? (I will start with my photo shoot at the cemetery. Then i will use photoshop to create background for poster. Then i will print image and glue text on it for my party event information. This should have a ransom note look to it. Then I will splatter additional fake blood onto the surface of the poster. Then I will take a close-up digital photo of this, so i can enlarge and make reproductions through photoshop.)
Provide a timeline for completing the project: (you will have class time next week to work on project)
(This weekend (9/18-20): Photo shoot
Wednesday (9/23): Upload images
Thursday in class(9/24): Begin creating photoshop poster background
Next weekend (9/25-27): Apply text and fake blood to poster, and photograph
Tuesday (9/29): Upscale images in photoshop, and print color poster on 11x 17 paper. Note: I will need help with printing--speak to instructor, and printing lab techs.
Thursday (10/1): Present poster in class.)
Project Due in class October 12, 2009.

Week Three
Overview
Creating a look, and image manipulations. Create an image for your blog header that
has a relationship with your blog design and an emphasis on shape and color composition.
In-Class
You will be emailed three images that exemplify a progression of manipulations that develop from one image. In-class you will follow the steps I took to produce each stage of manipulation. The tools covered in this in-class demo should be revisited in the completion of your blogger image header (due for homework--see below).
Photoshop
The image you are to create is to be installed (upload) and fitted for the header of your blog.
Create an image that you want your audience to associate with you, think image and identity. In photoshop manipulate the image in such a way that it has a visual relationship to the look and design of your blog.
For this assignment one goal is to create an iconic image (an image that has a clear and immediate impact that you think your audience will easily remember—and associate with you). For this, consider the number of images you work with, will it be a single image or a composite of images.
Blog Update
Add as a "gadget" to your blog a "Link List" to class blogs. Blogger will give you steps to take to add class blogs to a list of links. In the coming week you will be asked to add all of the class blogs to your list links.

Students will also be introduced to the Adobe InDesign and Bridge software programs and the use of internet-based software and media for research and electronic communication skills. The course will help and encourage students to learn the means to continue to develop and apply their skills in the use of the computer as an investigative and creative tool as they prepare to enter their chosen field of study. Supplies:
1- 2-4 Gigabyte USB Thumbdrive ($10-20).
Print Credits approximately $5.
*- Other supplies will be determined as needed ($15-25).
Course Requirements: The student’s relationship to her work must exhibit a full commitment to the process of thinking, looking and doing.
All projects are subject to faculty and peer review in the form of critique. Critique is the means by which the class will engage with visual information as an attempt to fully realize a technical, cognitive and intuitive understanding.
Utmost is the student’s responsibility to embrace the process and all imposed limitations (such as deadlines) as a challenge not only to her benefit, but also to her peer’s benefit for the insight she will bring to the class.
Attendance: Students are expected to attend every scheduled class. Any absence from class constitutes a cut. Students may have a total number of cuts without penalty equivalent to the number of times the class meets per week plus one. For this class each student is permitted two cuts. Each additional cuts will lower the final grade by half a letter, and more than Four cuts will result in a failing grade. Graded home-work due on a cut class will be considered late, unless the student notifies the professor prior to class. If the student is absent, it is her responsibility to contact the instructor in regards missed work.
Lateness: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class. It is better (of course) to come to class late, than not at all. Three late arrivals (15 minutes or more) is considered a cut.
Grading and evaluation: Grading will occur twice during the semester: at midterms and again at finals. At those times students receive an evaluation that will reflect the following criteria for grading.
1. Completed in-class and home work assignments—A demonstration of clear objectives, experimentation, and a drive for excellence
2. In-class participation—in-class to work and contribute constructively
3. Four critiques—Presentation of a mature and serious attitude toward her own and her peer's work
Deadlines: Course content will develop towards complexity both technically and conceptually. Completed project are to be learned from. Late projects will be down graded by one full letter grade for each week late. Projects more than two weeks late will not be accepted. Exceptions must be discussed prior with the professor.
Redo/ Extra-Credit: The Student may wish to redo an assignment to achieve more significant results, which is acceptable and encouraged. The student should discuss this situation as it arises with her instructor.
